This is where I was prepared to let the description of this record lie until having several hour-long conversations with a Ukrainian refugee, who is also a musician, shortly after my last album, ‘Husks of War,’ was released.
This refugee, le verger, approached me online about collaboration and I jumped at the opportunity. I felt my last record didn’t do the topic justice. Although proud of the end result, it felt incomplete and needed a more relatable element that would allow others to understand where I was trying to come from.
He gave me insight and perspective, regaling me with stories of writing music on long train rides with tape-reinforced windows and the carriage lights out to avoid becoming a target. There is so much more to this story that truly humanized it for me in a very literal sense with awful and dangerous conditions in his area. He and his family have been all over, dodging this. Suffice to say it opened my eyes from what I had guessed it was like to what it’s actually like.
